As part of building complex development called Brentwood Town Centre in Burnaby, the subject building is 51-storey building rising approximately 570 ft above the grade. From the wind tunnel test, the building is predicted to experience high accelerations due to vortex shedding.

Comprehensive wind studies were conducted for many buildings in Brentwood Town Centre developments. Especially for BTC 3, to resolve the acceleration issue of the building, a 60-ton one-directional sliding Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) was designed by Gradient Wind Engineering. The sliding TMD is much more compact in size and more economical compared to other conventional dampers such as pendulum or double pendulum dampers, while providing efficient supplemental damping. The TMD will be the first application in Canada, if it’s installation is pursued depending on outcome of field monitoring scheduled in year 2019 - 2020.
